## It is 2:14 in the morning and your mind will not stop

You have prayed about it. You have read the verse about being anxious for nothing. You have told yourself to trust God and get some sleep.

Your body did not get the message. Your chest is tight. Your jaw aches. You are running tomorrow's conversation for the fourth time, and you already know how it ends, and you keep running it anyway.

Then the sun comes up and you go be fine at work. You go be fine at church. Nobody in the pew next to you knows that you sat in the parking lot for nine minutes trying to get your breathing under control.

![A young woman sitting by a window, chin resting on her hand, looking out](https://www.transformedtherapy.org/hs-fs/hubfs/anxiety-counseling-houston-window.jpg?width=792&height=528&name=anxiety-counseling-houston-window.jpg)

Anxiety is not a character flaw. It is not evidence that you love God less than the person beside you. It is a treatable condition, and it is common. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 19.1 percent of American adults had an anxiety disorder in the past year, and 31.1 percent will experience one at some point in life.

You are not broken. You are carrying something that was never meant to be carried alone.

Why the usual advice stops working

## Anxiety does not live on your worries. It lives on your avoidance.

Every anxious mind eventually finds a workaround. You skip the meeting. You drive the long way. You check the symptom one more time. You keep the conversation surface level so it can't get hard.

Each workaround gives you relief within minutes. That relief is real, and it is also the problem. Your nervous system learns to believe that the thing you avoided was genuinely dangerous, and the fear grows a little larger for next time.

So your world shrinks. Not all at once. One reasonable decision at a time.

This is why willpower has not fixed it, and why "just stop worrying" has never once worked on a worried person. You do not need to try harder. You need a different move.

The avoidance cycle Anxiety spikes the meeting, the call You avoid it skip it, delay it, check Relief, in minutes and it is real The fear grows bigger next time Your world shrinks one reasonable decision at a time.

Each workaround pays out in minutes. That payout is what teaches your nervous system the thing was dangerous.

How we treat it

## Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

ACT is our primary approach to anxiety. It does not ask you to argue with your thoughts or wait until you feel calm before you live your life. It teaches you to hold the anxious thought differently and move toward what matters while the thought is still present.

According to the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science, more than 1,400 randomized controlled trials of ACT have been published across anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and stress.

In session, it comes down to three moves.

Notice it

### See the thought as a thought

You learn to catch the mind mid-spiral and observe it instead of obeying it. The thought "I am going to fail" stops being a forecast and becomes a sentence your brain produced under stress.

Name it

### Stop fighting the feeling

Anxiety grows when you wrestle it. You learn to make room for the discomfort, name it accurately, and let it be present without letting it drive.

Transform it

### Move toward what matters

We identify what you actually value as a spouse, a parent, a worker, a believer. Then we build small committed actions in that direction, starting this week, whether or not the anxiety cooperates.

ACT is the frame. It is not the only tool we use. Depending on what you bring in, your counselor may also draw on cognitive behavioral strategies, graded exposure for panic and phobia, breath and nervous system regulation, sleep and behavioral activation work, and trauma-focused care when the anxiety is rooted in something that happened to you.

The framework

## Anxiety is not a lack of faith

Many people arrive here carrying a second burden on top of the first one. They believe that a stronger Christian would not feel this way. That belief keeps people out of counseling for years, and it is not what Scripture teaches.

Read 1 Kings 19 again. Elijah had just watched God answer with fire, and days later he was under a tree asking to die. God did not rebuke him. God sent food, then sleep, then more food, then a quiet word. Body first. Rest second. Then the conversation.

> When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. Psalm 94:19

The Psalms are full of anxious people talking honestly to God. That is not weak faith. That is faith with the mask off.

Every counselor at Transformed Therapy is a licensed clinician and a follower of Christ. We will pray with you if you want that. We will open Scripture with you if that is what serves the work.

**Faith is the foundation. Clinical work is how we build on it.**

Holistic and solution focused

## Mind, body, and soul

Anxiety is never only in your head. It runs through your sleep, your breathing, your calendar, your caffeine, your marriage, and your prayer life at the same time. Treating one piece and ignoring the rest is why people plateau. We work the whole system.

Mind

Attention training, defusion from anxious thinking, worry postponement, realistic appraisal of risk, and clear language for what is actually happening in your body.

Body

Sleep, movement, breath work, caffeine complications, the risks of alcohol, and time outdoors. According to a 2019 study published in Scientific Reports, people who spent at least 120 minutes a week in nature reported significantly better health and wellbeing. We also coordinate with your physician when a medical workup or a medication question belongs in the plan.

Soul

Prayer, Scripture, stillness with God, confession, and community. We look honestly at where isolation, shame, or a distorted picture of God is feeding the fear.

![A walking path curving through a green park with the downtown Houston skyline beyond](https://www.transformedtherapy.org/hs-fs/hubfs/houston-park-green-space-anxiety-counseling.jpg?width=1400&height=934&name=houston-park-green-space-anxiety-counseling.jpg)

Two hours a week outdoors is one of the most consistently supported things you can do for an anxious nervous system.

Solution focused means we agree on the target in the first session and measure whether we are hitting it. We are not here to keep you in the chair for years.

## What people come to us for

- **Generalized anxiety and chronic worry.** The low hum that never fully turns off.
- **Panic attacks.** The racing heart, the tunnel vision, the certainty that something is medically wrong.
- **Social anxiety.** Rehearsing conversations before them and dissecting them for hours after.
- **Health anxiety.** Symptom checking, doctor visits that reassure you for about a day.
- **Performance and workplace stress.** Burnout, dread on Sunday night, the fear of being found out.
- **Intrusive thoughts.** Thoughts that horrify you and do not match who you are.
- **Anxiety in parenting.** Worry about your kids that has outgrown the actual risk.
- **Postpartum anxiety.** The vigilance that arrived with the baby and never left.
- **Anxiety after loss or trauma.** A nervous system still bracing for something that already happened.
- **Anxiety in marriage.** Walking on eggshells, conflict avoidance, distance that keeps growing.
- **Men who look fine on the outside.** Anxiety that shows up as anger, working late, or a short fuse at home.

What to expect

## Your first few sessions

1. ### Session one: the picture

We get the full story. What the anxiety does, when it started, what it costs you, what you have already tried. We take a baseline measure so progress is a number and not a guess. You leave the first session with at least one skill to use before you come back.
2. ### Sessions two and three: the plan

We name what you want your life to look like and work backward. You and your counselor agree on specific targets, the approach we will use, and roughly how long it should take.
3. ### Ongoing: measure and adjust

We re-measure every few weeks. If something is not moving, we change it rather than repeat it. We talk about the ending from the beginning, because the goal is your life back, not a standing appointment.

## This is for you if

- You have functioned well for years and something has started to slip.
- You have tried to pray it away and it did not go away.
- You want a counselor who shares your faith and is fully licensed.
- You want practical skills, not an hour of talking in circles.
- You are a parent, a spouse, or a leader, and other people are depending on you.
- You are a tween or teen starting to feel the pressure build up around you.
- You have been in counseling before and it did not help.

## Common questions

Is anxiety a sin?

Not always. Much of what anxiety is, is a physiological and psychological response, and Scripture is full of faithful people who experienced it. Guilt about anxiety is one of the most common things we treat, and it usually makes the anxiety worse. God doesn't want us to fall into the trap of constantly worrying and being anxious about anything, and this is where the real work begins. We learn to notice it sooner, identify what it is, then shift from worry to engaging in something else to ease our minds and make the choice to not sit in anxious thoughts.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We accept insurance and can verify your benefits before your first appointment. Call our office at (832) 464-5131 and we will confirm your coverage.

Do you offer online counseling?

Yes. We see clients in person at our Northwest Houston office and by secure telehealth anywhere in Texas. Telehealth works well for anxiety treatment and removes the drive on a hard week.

What about medication?

Counselors do not prescribe. Many people improve with therapy alone, and for some, medication is a reasonable part of the plan. We will give you an honest clinical opinion and coordinate with your physician or a psychiatric provider if you want that.

How long does anxiety treatment take?

Most clients notice movement within six to eight sessions, and many complete a course of treatment in three to four months. Anxiety layered over trauma or a long history can take longer.

What if I am having panic attacks?

Panic responds well to treatment, and often quickly. We teach you what is happening in your body, why it is not dangerous even though it feels dangerous, and how to stop the cycle that makes the next attack more likely.

Do you see teenagers?

Yes. Several of our counselors work with adolescents, and we also work with parents on how to support an anxious teenager without accidentally feeding the avoidance.

## You do not have to keep white knuckling this

One phone call is the whole first step. We will listen, answer your questions about insurance and scheduling, and match you with the counselor who fits what you are carrying.
